Glee Season 2 Secrets

Who will fall in love? Will we meet Rachel’s gay dads? What will the Britney Spears episode be like?

Glee creator Ryan Murphy answered all these questions and more on Sunday at Comic Con in San Diego, where fans waited for hours to hear from him and the show’s talented cast. And Gleeks everywhere can rejoice, because there’s enough drama in store for New Directions to fill an entire season — and maybe even a movie.

Season 2 will pick up at the beginning of a new school year at McKinley High, where the members of New Directions are bigger losers than ever before following their disappointing third-place finish at Regionals.

“It starts them off at ground zero and the theme of the second season is ‘Do you have what it takes to win?’ ” Murphy said. “It really catalogs them trying to climb up from the embarrassing abyss.”

Relationships will be tested as love will blossom in unexpected places. “Tina is going to fall out of love with Artie and in love with Mike,” Murphy revealed. And fans of a Brittany-Santana love connection may have something to look forward to as writers are considering an episode where Santana and Brittany kiss, Murphy said.

“We actually make-out all the time,” Naya Rivera joked.

Murphy also teased a few new characters who could join the series: “I really want to see who Rachel’s gay dads are,” he said. “And I have a feeling Brittany has a very smart older sister who’s horrified [by her].”

Murphy confirmed fan favorites Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth will return to the series, though not as regulars. He also shot down rumors that Justin Timberlake will make a guest appearance. “If we did do something like that, I think it would probably be down the line. But I think he would be the younger brother of Matt Morrison,” Murphy said. “I really don’t have a lot of plans for guest star stuff the second season. I always think of the tribute episodes that we do as sort of our ultimate guest stars.”

So whose music will make an appearance? “We’re doing six Britney [Spears] songs,” Murphy confirmed. “We’re paying tribute to her in a sort of fun and unexpected way.” Though he wouldn’t say if Spears herself would show up at McKinley, he did confirm the second season of Glee will have an episode to pay tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

As for the rumors Glee could soon take the silver screen, Murphy said, “We were offered that and I said no … I think one, it’s too early. And two, I don’t know what that movie would be … If we do a movie what we might do is a 3-D concert version of us at Radio City [Music Hall] or something like that.”

Overall, the new season of Glee will be more intimate and less flashy, which means less musical numbers. “Scaling back a little bit and letting the episodes be more about the characters is probably a good thing at this point,” Murphy said. But fans of the over-the-top style of Glee, fear not. Adds Murphy: “We might go back to the crazy spectaculars.”
